Back from Toyfair

I thought I was in shape... well I thought I was as much in shape as sitting around on my ass all day would get me. Toyfair ended up kicking that ass. I am not made for walking all day for four days carrying a pack. That and the drinking and the cold weather just knocked me out.

Toyfair was fun, but for all the hulabaloo, there were only about a dozen things in the entire show that impressed me, not counting the joyous wee sculpts of the artists in Urban Alley or a.k.a. the urban ghetto. The alley was a single section down in the basement we the independant makers and distributers were set up. We didn't have a booth, but we had maybe three or four things in the show in other booths.

The strange thing about the urban vinyl scene is that we aren't really in the toy business. We make these kooky collectible statuettes and wee posable figs it's true. And the design and manufacturing process is the same as toy design in most regards. But the products are usually very limited, very expensive, and rather fragile, not what anybody is looking for in a toy. But the crowd of creators are incredible artists and the scene is a fertile environment that the bigger serious toy companies are keeping an eye on. But I don't think they get it. And I am too worn out to explain what I think it is right now...

Some might call it a rut, but I prefer to call it thematically consistant. I like drawing droopy, somewhat depressed baldish men. And apes. And I don't know what that other thing is, but it is nicely lumpy, with an alien and disaffected gaze.

There are a lot of sketchbooks stashed around here. This one is the crusty old big book, a somewhat shredded behemoth annoyingly too expansive to fit on the scrawny little featherweight scanner.

This page is full of little heads, a favorite subject, mostly recreated in some way from ancient found photography. In this case they come from a few of old class group photos from the 30's or 50's, with a couple of odd snaps from the same time periods thrown in.
